Asana, it's Principle and Practices ( Asanas in Hatha Yoga )
Seven means & aids for body conditioning
- The satkarmas are used to purify the body;
- Asanas are practiced to strengthen the body;
- Mudra practice brings about steadiness;
- pratyahara technique results in calmness;
- Pranayama practice leads to lightness;
- Dyana gives Self-realization;
- Samadhi leads to isolation which is verily liberation.

Kuryattadasanam sthairyamarogyam cangalaghavam" ||
"Asana is the first limb of Hatha yoga is dealt with first. Asana brings mental as well as physical steadiness, health and a feeling of lightness".

Anyone who actively practices yoga, the young, old, or even very old, sicky or weak, can become a Siddha except the lazy.
Guidelines for the successful practice of asanas
- Build Foundations.
- The importance of relaxing the muscles.
- Maintenance of final static poses.
- Awareness.
- Relaxation after completion of asanas.
- Slow and controlled movement and coordination with breath.
Movements in Asana:
- Isotonic movements of muscles - the tone is constant & length changes i.e. exercise isotonic Movements involve contracting muscles while moving the joints around. White muscle fibers are active during isotonic movement & they consume excess oxygen. Oxygen consumption increase during exercise.
- Isometric movement of muscles - the tone is changing & length is constant i.e. Yoga Asana. Isometric Movement involve contracting the muscle while keeping the joint still. Red Muscle fibers are active during isometric movement & they consume less oxygen. Oxygen consumption decrease during Yoga Asana.
Classification of Asanas:
Cultural Asanas - They give good strength and postural fitness.
Relaxative Asanas - That gives relaxation.
Meditative Asanas - For Meditation.

- To Promote and maintain perfect Health: They re-establish a harmonious functioning of the body and mind as one integrated whole. This reduces stress and Strain and tensions arising out of interaction with external disturbances.
- To Overcome the Internal disturbances:Like tremor and Instability by reconditioning Psycho-physiological mechanisms and to prepare one for higher Yogic practices like Meditation.
- To bring about equilibrium in:Overall functions at the emotional, behavioral Level and perceptual level.
